Astounding photographic trick recreates mid-century America

elgin_thumbnailHow do you date a photo? Normally, you take a look at the fashion, the buildings, and the cars. If that’s how you do it then these nostalgic photos may well have you fooled.

Often recreated in movies, mid-20th century America is an obsession for many people, so a book portraying everyday scenes from this era shouldn’t raise many eyebrows. But Michael Paul Smith‘s Elgin Park: An Ideal American Town is getting all kinds of notice. That’s because Smith, a New England photographer, has created 144 pages of pure magic — especially when you know how he did it.

Shot at the right distance with forced perspective, Smith combines real-life outdoor landscapes with miniature sets and tiny die-cast cars. The result is a completely believable set of photographs that transport us back half a century.

In addition to photography, Smith is also a textbook illustrator and model-building enthusiast whose formula for creating the shots is relatively simple. Using a simple point-and-shoot camera worth just $250, Smith sets the shot on instinct, no measuring or math required. Smith’s greatest tool is merely a great eye — and a lifetime of experience.

How to use video backgrounds for incredible visual impact, part 2

thumbnailIn the previous part of this tutorial, using a mixture of HTML5, jQuery and CSS, we constructed the barebones functionality of our HTML5-driven full-screen video background. This time, we’re going to be styling it, preparing fallbacks for it, and understanding how it can be used as part of your own working designs. In today’s guide, we’ll be adding to our fullscreen video in a number of ways, including:

  • creating our own pattern overlays to sit over the top of our video; such as old-television-style scan lines, styling your video to suit your own design;
  • converting our video to multiple formats to enable universal cross-browser support for your video background.

Along with all of this, I’ll also show an example of how the video can be used creatively by layering other elements over the top of it, showing you how this powerful technique can fuel your own new designs; or even provide a new, exciting background for that design you’re currently working on!

Have you used fullscreen video as a background in one of your designs? Do you have a preferred method of implementation? Let us know in the comments.
