Earthquake Flashlight
When a natural disaster strikes in the middle of the night, the last thing you want to do is waste time stumbling around in the dark looking for a flashlight. So a company in Japan, where recent disasters have left the country on high alert, has developed an LED flashlight that automatically lights up when an earthquake hits.
The Gura-pika flashlight can be charged via a USB port, a conventional outlet, or a built-in hand crank, providing 14 hours of continuous illumination on a full battery. And it’s also got a built-in radio tuned to emergency broadcasts and alerts which is how the flashlight knows when to automatically turn on. (at Gizmodo)
Fino Collection
The Viennese designer Thomas Feichtner has designed an entire furniture collection made of solid wood. The 18-piece collection consists of dining tables, benches, chairs, cabinets, shelving units and a secretary desk, as well as smaller items such as a stool and side tables. Feichtner’s design strategy was to eliminate the heavy and massive quality typical of solid wood furniture while retaining its constructive materiality. (at Designer Spotter)

CST-01 Watch
“The World’s Thinnest Watch” is a bold claim to make — but at just 0.8mm thick, we’re inclined to believe it. The CST-01 Watch ($130) achieves this by packing its guts — a battery, E Ink display, and controller chip — into a 0.5mm pocket etched into the single-piece stainless steel band. That doesn’t leave much room for controls, of course, which is why they’re mounted on the recharging base — although with a 10 minute charge time and month-long battery life, you’re not going to be visiting the base very often.
